MAURO GAZZARA
TRAINING PATH, ARTISTIC ACTIVITY AND AWARDS
Mauro Gazzara was born in Biella on 25 September 1958 and moved to Prato with his family at the age of four.
From 1974 to 1982 he attended the Leonardo School of Arts and Crafts in Prato, a historical art school of the artistic reality of Prato that was born at the dawn of 1919 and around which artists of the caliber of Oscar Gallo, Leonetto Tintori, gather and train. Quinto Martini, Gino Brogi, Ottone Rosai and where illustrious students have continued to train over the years such as Tosco Andreini, Anna Sanesi, Gabriella Furlani, Mario Cappelli, Umberto Bonora, Elio De Luca.
At the Leonardo School of Arts and Crafts, he acquires the Diploma of Professional Draftsman and subsequently the Diploma of Advertising Graphic \ Artistic Graphics.
He has as teachers, among others, Anna Sanesi (Painting), Gabriella Furlani (Drawing), Alpo Bellandi (Graphics), Mario Cappelli (Plastic Arts and Sculpture). Through these courses he acquires wide-ranging skills in the arts of drawing, painting, engraving, sculpture that will characterize the subsequent evolution of his artistic research.
Even after the acquisition of diplomas, Gazzara continues to attend school, in particular the courses of Sculpture and Plastic Arts.
Still at a young age he enrolled in the "Federation of Pratesi Artists" and participated in many events, competitions and collective painting, receiving many acclaim, awards and prizes:
In 1974 at the age of 15 he was awarded the 2nd international prize for painting and graphics organized by the Muzzi Art Gallery in Prato.
In 1975 he was awarded the 3rd international prize for painting and graphics "Oscar homage to Carlo Levi".
In 1977 he participated in the collective exhibition at the Falsetti Art Gallery in Prato.
In 1978 he was awarded at the "Torchio d’Argento" graphic competition in Genoa; he participates in the 5th edition of the “Il Cenacolo” international painting prize in Florence; and at the 2nd national painting competition "City of Castiglione dei Pepoli", obtaining a "Special Report".
Then for a long time he no longer participates in this type of event, unable to draw any incentives for his artistic research.
Although secluded, he continues to exhibit, especially in places not officially assigned to art, trying to propose artistic language to people, in people's places.
This experience allowed him to refine his research work which resulted in 1988, in a solo show that was very successful in Pistoia, presented by the journalist and art critic Salvatore Sorbello.
In 1992 he was invited by the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Montemurlo to participate in the exhibition "Lines of the Current Artistic Research" curated by the journalist Riccardo Tempestini.
The research continues, even on an inner level (it is the human relationships that broaden and strengthen the sense of everyday life) that led Gazzara in 1993, to create, in collaboration with other artists, "La Bottega d'Arte Comune di Prato, with the understanding of Art as a "Cultural, Personal and Social Proposal".
In 1996, on the occasion of the twinning between the school of the municipality of Montemurlo and that of Athenee Royal, of the Municipality of Chatelet in Belgium, he was asked to create a work representing the Municipality of Montemurlo, which will be donated as a symbol of exchange and cooperation.
In 1998 he exhibited with a solo exhibition entitled "The Art of Being Together" at the Bottega D’Arte Municipality of Iolo, Prato.
He returns to the prize events, (pushed by colleagues and friends) towards the end of 1999, participating in the International Award of Contemporary Painting "Art in Prato", where he will finish third.
At that point, having gained very important human and artistic experiences, he believes it is the right time to return to the official world of art.
In 2000 he was present at the "Italy Award for Visual Arts" - XV Edition - organized by the magazine Eco d’Arte Moderna in Certaldo, in the Palazzo Pretorio, receiving a "Report of Merit"; he participates in the 7th International Painting and Graphics Competition "THE game in art" at Villa Ormond in San Remo; He wins the “Most Significant End of Millennium” Artists Award and exhibits in Rome, at the “Il Collezionista” Gallery, between December 2000 and January 2001.
In 2001 he enrolled in the "Art Events" Contemporary Artists Club of Pistoia, and joined the "Assioma" Center of Art and Culture in Prato where he deepened and expanded his artistic research by comparing himself with other artistic perspectives.
The exhibition activity in 2001 becomes intense and leads Gazzara to a transformation and stylistic turning point, passing from a painting with a surreal imprint, to a more personal and original form of expression in which an essentiality is sought in the human figure, which remains central, but which shapes and transforms itself to express an interiority on the outside that no longer remains hidden in the figure but is made to emerge on the surface: the signs are born that affect the faces and bodies that represent the passage of time and signs left by life. He also begins a continuous experimentation on materials that will accompany him throughout his artistic career up to the present.
With these transformations, he proposes himself to the public with a personal exhibition entitled “Metamorphosis” at the Tuttarte Gallery in Prato; He exhibits at the “Aprilart” painting and sculpture exhibition at the former Church of San Giovanni Battista in Pistoia; Participate in the "Italy Award for the Visual Arts" - XVI Edition in Capraia Fiorentina, in the former Pasquinucci furnace, winning an "Editorial Award"; participates in the 3rd Grand Prix of Painting "Art Events" in Pistoia and exhibits with a solo show at the Caffè Gilda; participates in the international painting and sculpture exhibition "Italian Art in Espana" organized by the Italian Cultural Association and the Sanremo Art Workshop, where he is awarded the "Salvador Dalì 2001" award.
In 2002 he was present at the collective of the "International Art Grand Prize" at the "Studio d’Arte Due" Gallery in Venice, and set up a personal exhibition at the "Star Hotel Vespucci" in Florence.
In 2003 he was awarded by the Head of State Carlo Azeglio Ciampi with the Silver Medal of the Presidency of the Italian Republic for the Art In Court project conceived together with the artists of the Assioma di Prato group. He also wins the Visual Arts Section Prize at the XXI Edition of the Florence Prize (December 2003) and is the winner of the Italy Prize for the Visual Arts 2003 Edition at the Ex-Fornace Pasquinucci. In 2004 he created the monumental site-specific Porta della Memoria located on the roundabout leading to the town of Montemurlo, Prato. He also creates the permanent installation Le Figure Dell 'Anima, for the Luicciana Open Air Museum-the Museum of Contemporary Art of Luicciana, Municipality of Cantagallo, Prato.
In the following years he continued with an intense artistic activity, exhibiting in collective and personal exhibitions, participating in fairs and continuing to receive awards and recognitions. Among the most important activities we mention the design and construction of painting and sculpture works for the interior of the Chapel of the Cemetery of Montemurlo, Prato, La Cappella Della Luce (2006); he founded the artistic association "L'Artelier" with a group of artists from Montemurlo with whom he participated in the creation of the site-specific work The Time Machine located on the roundabout of the Montalese provincial in Montemurlo, Prato within the Territoria # 3 project . The Contemporary Space, organized by the Region of Tuscany, the Province of Prato, the Municipality of Montemurlo, the Center for Contemporary Art L. Pecci (2008); in 2009 he participated with the personal exhibition “Amazement” in Territoria 4 - The Great Leap. Curated by Bert Theis, and participates in the creation of the "Aerosolar Project" by the artist Thomas Saraceno, coordinated by the Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art; the following year he participated in the Provincial Project of contemporary art “Thomas Ruff” curated by Pier Luigi Tazzi, with the personal exhibition “Le Stanze del Sapere. An experimental reinterpretation of the territory through art and photography "in Montemurlo, Prato, also coordinated by the Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art.
In the following years he joined the group of Florentine artists “Society of Fine Arts; Circolo degli Artisti La casa di Dante "and subsequently of the KPK group (Kantiere post Kontemporaneo - not a movement but in motion) in which individual work merges into collective work and each artist" renounces the charm of the EGO, to affix the own individual signature in the work, in favor of the creation of a collective work in which the contribution of each artist interpenetrates with the dimensions of the others ". Currently, Gazzara's artistic work, as it has been outlined in his evolution and research, is focused on the depiction of faces in the foreground on which the artist intervenes by engraving signs and applying oxidations in order to deconstruct and cancel the image to make emerge and reveal the essence and the deepest and most hidden aspects contained in the work. The essence is not always revealed in the "beauty" or in what one likes, it can also pass through what at first sight does not like but which forces one to go deep, go to the root and bring out a truth that is inside the work or that can be grasped in the relationship with it.
The interventions represent the passage of time and the traces left by life: experiences, emotions, vital energy, thoughts, memories of joys and dramas that have marked moments of passage and transformation in the life of the person: it is the cycle of life that flows in the flow of time and in the spectrum of emotions that crosses it, in a timeless journey through time.
The communicative language of the works is immediate to evoke imaginative suggestions and bring out memories and emotions.
The face not only represents the person depicted, but looks beyond, inside, to grasp the complexity, the lights and shadows present in the human being, in a mutual interpenetration of the profound aspects of life as a testimony of the eternity and universality of the human condition. .
